Milestone for CONTURA G2 CMM from Carl Zeiss

The CONTURA G2 was introduced in December of 2005, and since then the company has produced 2,000 of the advanced scanning machines. “This is the most successful machine Carl Zeiss IMT has ever developed,” says Josef Schernthaner, vice president of operations. “The reason behind the success of this machine, even in the current economy, is the CONTURA G2’s flexibility in sensors and its excellent price performance ratio. The CONTURA G2 was a high demand product right out of the gate and is still a very sought after machine. Sales continue to be strong and customers are extremely satisfied with its unique features.”

The bridge-type CMM features the next generation scanning platform and is available in three configurations, CONTURA G2 direkt, CONTURA G2 RDS, and CONTURA G2 aktiv. All models use ZEISS VAST® technology and offer the same high accuracy with either articulating scanning or active scanning.

CONTURA G2 RDS is designed for measuring complex features and parts with multiple angles that require smaller styli. It features the ZEISS RDS articulating probe holder that can reach 20,376 positions in 2.5° increments and the VAST® XXT probe for articulating scanning. VAST XXT can be used with styli up to 250 mm in length and styli as small as 0.3 mm. Its large deflection range and low measuring force make it a very robust scanning sensor.
CONTURA G2 aktiv is ideal for measuring deep features, self centering, and high-throughput needs. It is available with the VAST XT sensor for multi-point measurement of size, form, and position. VAST XT offers active scanning and single-point measuring. With its high-speed, high-point density capability, VAST XT is suitable for all applications in curve and freeform metrology and reverse engineering. It can be equipped with extensions up to 500 mm and support styli weights of up to 500 g.

CONTURA G2 direkt provides a particularly affordable means of entering the world of scanning technology from Carl Zeiss for production and progress inspection of single processing stages. The CMM is equipped with the VAST XXT scanning sensor and is designed for measurements on small parts with normal, squared geometries. These parts are usually generated by boring and milling centers in 2.5 or 3D processes. In general, a small single stylus or star stylus is sufficient. The VAST XXT scanning sensor enables measurements of geometry, form and position. Plastic and metal parts can also be measured.

CONTURA G2 is available with the CAD-based scanning CALYPSO software and its extensions Gear-Pro for gear measurement and Blade-Pro for blade measurement. CALYPSO can be combined with HOLOS, designed for the measurement of 3D surfaces. Measuring programs generated in CALYPSO can be effectively used on a wide range of measuring machines and in different areas. A measuring program created offline with CALYPSO can be used to manually measure unfinished parts. Subsequently, the same program can be used on a CNC coordinate measuring machine for an acceptance test measurement of the finished part.
